June 23 2011.The adult and youth ACU British Quad Cross Championships are to undergo major face-lifts in 2012, in an effort to make them more attractive to competitors, spectators, sponsors and organisers. The adult championship will continue to be contested over several rounds, but will be run in conjunction with existing club events. Three ACU clubs, NORA-MX, NETT and QRS have each committed to run two rounds each. It is also hoped to run an additional ‘Showcase’ round away from a dedicated quad club event. Entry to the series, which will be limited to 450cc machines from 2012, will be restricted to the top 20 riders from 2011, plus a further 14 riders who will be able to qualify on the day at each round. The youth championship classes will be settled over one action-packed weekend in the late summer, instead of the current system of several rounds spread throughout the year. It is hoped that this more cost-effective format will develop into one of the biggest quad racing festivals of the year and aims to attract all the UK’s young rising stars to go head to head for the titles. Entry to the championship, which will have no registration fee, will be by invitation from the ACU, based on the standings in the youth championships of member clubs at the time of the event. The weekend festival will also include a round of the British adult championship, and feature an Inter Club Team Championship for youth and adult classes. The plans were approved by the ACU Quad Racing Sub Committee earlier this month. Commenting on the changes, Committee Chairman Ron Humphrey said, “The quad clubs have taken the initiative in the current financial climate to reduce competitor's costs and help the British Youth Quad Cross championship to establish itself.” It is also proposed to lower the age limit of an adult quad competitor from 16 to 15 years, providing the rider has a history of at least two year’s club racing experience. The 250 Standard and Stock classes age limits will range from 11 to 16 years. In addition, it was confirmed that the adult and youth British Quad Cross Country Championships would continue to be organised by Quad Events UK. QEUK plan to increase the series from six to eight rounds in 2012, including new venues in the north of the country.
