August 19 2010. John Morgan runs a couple of non-competitive riding sites in West Sus*** - the second Sunday of every month at Boxgrove Pit and the fourth Sunday at Slindon - but John is puzzled by the apparent lack of interest displayed by leisure quad owners/riders to make use of his facilities. There are very few places in the South where you can take your quads for a good off-road spin so as the old adage goes; use it or lose it. "Finding places to ride and explore must surely be a priority for existing quadders and those considering making their first purchase. "By necessity, I have had to exclude under-16s and perhaps, having effectively excluded family groups from riding, this is one reason for the relatively low interest to date from the quad riding fraternity. However, for safety reasons, it would present too high a risk to allow young riders to free-ride and explore a 75-acre site which is largely part jungle/part moonscape. But, if the market demanded it and there was a safe way to organise and control junior riders in the future, then I'm more than happy to consider and discuss it. "I have laid out a 2.2-mile undulating trail that twists through trees, dips in undergrowth and climbs around the perimeter of Boxgrove Pit and, at Slindon, there are several dedicated quad trails in the forest area. I will lead a trek around these trails when newcomers arrive so that they can enjoy them safely and find them again when on their own, or with friends. I will contact every quad dealer in the area to promote quad riding at my sites, as I firmly believe that the potential is there. It not easy to find places in the UK to ride quads and I'm sure this must influence potential newcomers. I do get requests from pit bikers, etc., to use the sites but, whilst I sympathise with their lack of legal areas to ride, I cannot allow them access as the machines are often far too noisy and there seems to be a tendency to ride flat-out everywhere. "In the hope that we can kick-start some interest in local leisure riding, anyone producing a copy of the September issue of QUAD Magazine can take advantage of a half-price entry fee of just GBP10 (normal entry GBP20) per rider. The sites open at 10am and close at 4pm; the next riding date for Boxgrove is 12th September, and Slindon will be open on 26th September. All other dates can be found at www.4x4driving.co.uk
