August 17 2010.Comerton Farm, Leuchars, provided the venue at the weekend for the latest instalment of the ACU British Quad Championships, Quad Racing Scotland hosting round four of the GOLDSPEED ACU British Quad Championship on Saturday the 14th of August, while Sunday the 15th would see round five of the series promoted alongside round four of the ACU British Masters Championship and the second round of the ACU British Youth Quad Championship. With glorious sunshine for the entire weekend and the sandy Fife circuit providing a tough challenge for the large entry of riders taking part, the action was fast and furious from the off and kept the large crowd of spectators well entertained with some fantastic battles and a few upsets along the way. After one of the closest starts in many years, the GOLDSPEED ACU British Quad Championship again provided some fantastic racing over the two days with some hotly contested racing. As action got underway on Saturday for the first of the three planned twenty-minute plus two-lap motos, it was James Hellewell who lead the field out on the opening lap with team-mate Paul Winrow leading the pursuit from Paul Holmes, Carl Bunce and Jason Macbeth, but Winrow wasn't for hanging about and by the end of the opening lap had taken the lead. After a fast and furious opening two laps Holmes had pushed past Hellewell for 2nd with Macbeth and John Mitchell getting the better of Bunce, but on the following lap a mistake saw Holmes drop back to 7th behind Mark Watson. At the halfway point Mitchell had moved up to 2nd and was all over the back of Winrow with Macbeth under pressure from the hard charging duo of Holmes and Hellewell, but unfortunately for the large crowd any chance of a home win was negated with Mitchell forced to retire with four laps to go. As the two-lap board came out Holmes had bridged the gap to Winrow with Hellewell passing team-mate Macbeth for 3rd, and after a dramatic final two laps that saw the lead change hands several times, it was Winrow who took the chequered from Holmes, Hellewell taking his first ever British podium in 3rd with Macbeth and Watson filling out the top five. As the gates dropped for the second heat, it was Holmes who grabbed the holeshot with Hellewell, Winrow, Mitchell and Macbeth leading the chase, the positions remaining the same until two laps in when Mitchell passed Winrow for 3rd. As the race neared the halfway point Holmes had pulled a significant gap with Mitchell and Winrow battling for 3rd, and Macbeth quickly closing in, but once again Mitchell's luck was to desert him with four laps to go with another retirement and no score. Hellewell was now under pressure from the duo of Bunce and Watson, Watson having charged through the pack from dead last after getting tangled up at the start only to see his race end prematurely with a broken tie rod with two laps to go, and at the flag it was Holmes for a gate to flag win from Winrow, Macbeth taking 3rd with Bunce and Hellewell the top five. After a delay earlier in the day as medics attended to a downed rider and with time running out, the Clerk Of Course made the difficult decision to cancel the remaining block of races in the interest of safety, Holmes and Winrow tied on points for the overall win with Holmes getting the nod, with Macbeth rounding out the podium. In the British Under 21 class, running within the main class but scored separately, it was James Hellewell who took a clean sweep of race wins for the overall, Sam Bryan maintaining his consistenty to take the second step with a 3-3, while Josh Barrett rounded out the podium after scoring 2-5. As Sunday's action kicked of it was Winrow who lead the charge in to the first corner from Watson, Hellewell and Macbeth, but a fantastic move around the outside saw Watson get the drive to take the lead shortly afterwards. In a frantic opening stage of the race that saw the top five split by no more than two seconds, Macbeth and Holmes moved past Hellewell on the second circuit with Macbeth passing team-mate Winrow to challenge Watson on lap four. At the halfway point Macbeth took the lead with Holmes following him past Watson for 2nd, Holmes taking the lead on the following lap with Macbeth, Watson and Winrow in very close proximity. With four laps to go Watson and Winrow got the better of Macbeth while Bunce had moved up to 5th, and at the flag it was Holmes for the win, Winrow putting a last lap pass on Watson for 2nd with Macbeth and Bunce rounding out the top five. The second race of the day saw Holmes take the holeshot with Watson, Winrow, Hellewell and Macbeth giving chase, Macbeth passing Hellewell for 4th on the second lap. Despite the tough conditions, the leading group lapped at a blistering pace with Winrow moving up to 2nd on lap five, a mistake by Watson at the halfway point allowing Macbeth, Hellewell and Bunce to slip through. Hellewell re-passed Macbeth for 3rd as the race entered the second phase with Mitchell joining the affray after a poor start, and after twelve hot and dusty laps it was Holmes with another gate to flag win, Winrow taking the runner up spot with team-mate Hellewell 3rd, Mitchell and Macbeth completing the top five. In order to facilitate three races for everyone, the final heat of the day was reduced to fifteen-minutes plus two-laps with the agreement of the majority of the riders. As the gates dropped it was Winrow who exited the first corner in the lead with Holmes hot on his heels, Lindsey Duke, Macbeth and Sam Bryan closely following as the field charged out for the first of nine laps, Macbeth and Bryan having a coming together in the next corner that would prove costly later in the race. As the dust settled and the leaders completed the first lap, it was Winrow from Holmes and Macbeth, with Hellewell, Bunce and Richard Tordoff close behind. Holmes took the lead on the following lap with Hellewell moving to 3rd, Macbeth losing out to Bunce and Mitchell after pitting on the following lap to assess a badly damaged radiator as a result of the opening lap incident before being forced to retire shortly afterwards. At the chequered flag it was Holmes from Winrow and Hellewell, with Mitchell getting the better of Bunce for 4th. Holmes took the overall win, Winrow claiming the runner up spot, while Hellewell took the 3rd step and his first ever British overall podium appearance. Winrow has now extended his lead in the series to forty points with Holmes now in 2nd, Watson is a further twenty-one points behind and six ahead of Bunce, Macbeth six points further down the board. In the Under 21 class Hellewell took another clean sweep to take the overall win and the lead in the series, Bryan taking the second step with a 3-2-2 with David Cowan taking the final step after posting a 2-3-4. The ACU British Masters Quad Championship has had an exciting start to the season with some epic tussles, and this meeting was no exception with series leader Geoffrey Ingram taking the overall win with a 2-1-1 to extend his lead. After some close fought battles with Ingram on the day, Geoff Sharp took an opening moto win to finish 1-2-2 and second overall, with Ian Neill taking 3-3-3 for third. After an explosive opening round at Dean Moor, the second round of the ACU British Youth Quad Championship delivered another dramatic spectacle of race action, the future stars of the British Quad Racing scene battling around the same demanding circuit as the adults. In the 50cc class it was Matthew Strauchan who continued to dominate the class, taking a clean sweep and the overall from Bobby Carmichael with 2-2-2, Dylan McKenna and Jonty Wright tying on points for 3rd with 4-4-3 and 3-3-5 respectively, McKenna getting the nod for 3rd. Ayrton Knowles took the top step in the hotly contested 50cc Modified class with a 2-1-2 score, Harry Carmichael overcoming a problematic middle moto to finish 2nd with 1-5-1, while George Oliver maintains his excellent performance with 3-2-3 and 3rd. In the 100cc Standard class it was Marloe Magee who took a hat-trick of wins for the overall, series leader Harrison Sharpe going 2-2-2 for the runner up spot, James Rawlins and Luke Penrose tied on points for 3rd place, Rawlins claiming the spot with a 3-7-3. Jordan Harris continues to dominate the 100cc Modified class with yet another clean sweep to make it six from six, Connor Paxton taking the runner up spot in each heat for the second step while Dafydd Davies posted 3-3-3 for the final step. Brad Swinbank took a comfortable 1-1-1 to maintain his lead in the 100cc Geared class, Harry Walker claiming the second step with a 3-2-3 with Lawrence Whyte's ever improving 4-3-2 scorecard good enough for 3rd. Daniel Lewis took a maximum score in the 250cc Standard class to extend his series lead, Scott Wilson recording a 2-5-2 for second step on the podium and in the standings, James Frew posting 4-3-3 for the final podium position. In the 250cc Stock class it was Harry Moore who took the win with a 1-2-1, Connor McKenna runner up with a 3-1-2 finish, while Shannon McKenna made a first podium appearance of the series with a 2-2-3. The 250cc Modified class provided some of the closest racing of the day, Leon Rogers and Luke Cooper tying on points for the overall with Rogers getting the nod, Scott Pounder and Adam James also tied on points for 3rd with Pounder awarded the final step. After three epic heats in the 250cc Open class, it was Connor Smith who took the win by just one point from series leader Alexander Thompson, Mark McLernon scoring 2-3-3 to take 3rd. The series now enjoys a four-week break before resuming at Culham for the NORA MX promoted double-header finale on the 18th and 19th September 2010.
